The development of the intellectual property system is one of the priorities of the Government of Georgia. This includes incorporating into Georgian legislation the modern standards and approaches set out in international legal instruments and the European Union acquis. In this context, amendments to the Law of Georgia on Design were adopted in 2025.
The amendments strengthened the legislative and institutional framework for design, bringing it into full alignment with European Union legislation in the field of design protection and further harmonizing it with international best practices. They also enhanced the system of design examination and legal protection and expanded the powers of Sakpatenti's Appeals Board, the body responsible for reviewing disputes.
In addition, Sakpatenti introduced a re-examination mechanism as an alternative to judicial proceedings. This mechanism enables interested parties to seek the invalidation of a design registration before Sakpatenti on nearly all grounds for invalidation available before a court. As a result, it is expected to enhance the efficiency of the design protection system and enable interested parties to avoid lengthy and costly judicial proceedings.
In 2025, a draft law amending the Law of Georgia on Design was prepared. The amendment aims to bring Georgian legislation into full compliance with the provisions of the Design Law Treaty, adopted on 24 November 2024 at the Diplomatic Conference organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Georgia's accession to the Design Law Treaty will further align the national legal system with international best practices and strengthen Georgia's position in the global intellectual property system

In 2025, Sakpatenti implemented numerous initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness and education on intellectual property (IP), including designs. A milestone among these was the launch of Georgia's first international master’s program in IP law. Developed on the basis of a trilateral memorandum signed between WIPO, Kutaisi International University (KIU), and Sakpatenti, the program focuses specifically on intellectual property protection and innovation.
The Intellectual Property Education and Training Center of Sakpatenti regularly incorporates all innovative developments and updates related to design into its educational activities and training materials. For example, the general intellectual property course DL101GE has been available in the Georgian language on the Distance Learning Platform of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy since 2018. The course includes a dedicated module on industrial designs, covering the importance of design protection and its strategic use.
The center also established the International Summer School of Intellectual Property Law, organized youth camps, and conducted various training sessions, student activities, and professional internship programs
Sakpatenti, on the one hand, has access to EU and international databases, and on the other hand, also provides information on designs protected in Georgia.
