CNIPA has always adhered to a user-centered approach, with the goal of continuously improving examination quality and efficiency, and has actively explored the application of technologies such as large models and AI agents in the field of patent examination, achieving positive progress in addressing key and difficult operational issues. In July 2025, we deployed multiple large models within our systems and completed the construction of an AI Capability Enhancement Center, providing examiners with AI tools for three core competencies:
- For design search capability, CNIPA has achieved automatic recognition and search of partial designs by deeply integrating a vision large model with an image search engine.
- For technical comprehension capability, we provide an AI Academic Assistant service. Examiners can conduct search and real-time Q&A based on academic journals through natural language dialogue, enabling them to quickly understand technical backgrounds, grasp technological development trends, and improve the relevance of their learning.
- For legal application capability, we developed an AI Legal Assistant that integrates data resources such as laws and regulations, typical cases, and training courses to build a specialized knowledge base. Leveraging the intelligent Q&A and logical reasoning capabilities of large models, it enables legal provision retrieval, case analysis, and training Q&A functions, providing examiners with round-the-clock "mentor" services and offering legal support for making sound examination conclusions.
In 2026, CNIPA's new projects: Large-model applications, system password security upgrades, implementation of WIPO Standard ST.92, equipment updates, and other related matters.

The principal publication of CNIPA is the Design Patent Grant Publication. It contains a front page (bibliographic data and one drawing or photograph designated by the applicant as best showing the essential features of the design), drawings or Tphotographs of the design , and a brief description. The publication is available online at epub.cnipa.gov.cn.
The official gazette is the Patent Gazette for Designs. It is published twice weekly (Tuesdays and Fridays) and is available online at epub.cnipa.gov.cn.
In terms of industrial design information resources for examiners, CNIPA provides examiners with a dedicated industrial design search system and a supporting search database: the database contains all Chinese industrial design data, while also integrating industrial design data submitted by various countries, regions, and international organizations. Textual data is stored in XML format, and drawings are stored in TIFF and JPEG formats. Examiners can search by image, application number, classification number, and other methods. In 2025, approximately 950,000 new searchable records of Chinese and foreign industrial design patent documents were added to the database, in XML, JPG, TIF, and GIF formats.
In terms of industrial design information resources for external users, CNIPA provides:
1. Patent Search and Analysis Service: Freely accessible, covering global patent data. Access URL: https://pss-system.cponline.cnipa.gov.cn
2. China and Multi-Country Patent Examination Information Inquiry Service: Freely accessible.
- Domestic access URL: https://cpquery.cnipa.gov.cn
- International access URL: https://cpquery.cponline.cnipa.gov.cn/user/login
Regarding industrial design legal status information: Our patent legal status data covers over 50 types of legal status for invention patents, utility models, and designs, in XML format. In 2025, approximately 1.34 million new legal status records were added for Chinese industrial design patents. Chinese users can check the legal status of cases through the China and Multi-Country Patent Examination Information Inquiry Service. International users can log in via the international version to check the legal status of their cases.

In 2021 and 2023, CNIPA respectively launched the Intelligent Search and Intelligent Examination systems (hereinafter referred to as the "i-system"). In July 2025, we further released the Search Large Model, AI Academic Assistant, and AI Legal Assistant, providing strong support for patent examination work.
Horizontally, the i-system covers industrial design business types including design patents and Hague international applications. Vertically, it runs through the entire workflow, from filing, acceptance, examination, reexamination, to invalidation. Leveraging modern information technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, and microservices, and focusing on intelligent assisted examination and automated retrieval assistance, the system has optimized core functions including design-related legal provisions, Hague DAS copy acquisition, and refined management of evaluation reports. This has comprehensively enhanced the centralization, intelligence, and convenience of transaction processing, patent examination, and public services. (For details on the Search Large Model, AI Academic Assistant, and AI Legal Assistant, please refer to Question 1.)
Regarding the electronic search database: CNIPA has provided examiners with a dedicated industrial design search system and a supporting search database: the database contains all Chinese industrial design data since 1985, while also integrating industrial design data submitted by various countries, regions, and international organizations.
Regarding the administrative management system: The Patent Business Processing System provides comprehensive online administrative services for registration, filing, and fee payment throughout the entire process:
- It enables online handling of various patent ownership and status registration matters, including patent pledge registration, patent implementation license contract recordal, patent open license declaration registration, bibliographic data change registration, and patent right preservation registration. Registration results are reflected in real-time updates to the patent legal status.
- It supports invention patent, utility model patent, PCT international phase, and PCT national phase entry applications. Upon successful registration and submission, an electronic filing receipt is automatically generated, and the application synchronously enters the patent examination process.
- It supports 24/7 online fee payment, with payment results fed back in real time and fee information automatically synchronized to the patent examination system. All types of official patent fees can be paid, including application fees, annuities, reexamination and invalidation request fees, and priority claim fees. Supporting functions include electronic payment invoice management, fee inquiry, reference number management, and suspense account handling. Upon completion of payment, electronic fiscal-compliant invoices are automatically generated, with query and download functions provided.
- It supports digital certificate signing for electronic filing users. The system provides download services for official notices and patent certificates, along with online verification of electronically signed documents.
Regarding hardware: CNIPA has adopted a cloud computing infrastructure, organically integrating information technologies such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence with patent examination business scenarios to support the digital and intelligent development of business processes.
