The expression "industrial designs" covers industrial designs and models. Offices which issue design patents should report their design patent information activities in this series of Annual Technical Reports.

In 2006, Malaysia recorded an annual decrease of 7.43% (from 1,116 to 1,033) in the total number of industrial designs applications received but achieved an increase of 124% (from 525 to 1,175) in the total number of registrations. Local and foreign applications decreased by 11.4% (from 449 to 398) and 4.8% (from 667 to 635) respectively.

Publishing, including printing, copying techniques and electronic printing
Lists of industrial designs which has been registered, renewed, lapsed, corrected or which has requested for restoration are published monthly in the Government Gazette.

Classification and reclassification activities; Classification system used, e.g., International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification), other classification (please indicate whether industrial designs are classified by your Office and, if so, which classification is used)
For the purpose of examination the International Classification for Industrial Designs(Locarno Classification, 8th Edition) is used.

Designs are searchable by classes.
IV. Search file establishment and upkeep
File building
Applications received are kept in files and each file will be assigned an application number.

Registers for applications received and registered designs are updated regularly.

Application files are kept within the examination section until registration had been granted.

No documentation from other offices is maintained or considered as part of the search material. However examiners have access to the internet for reference purposes.
V. Activities in the field of computerized search systems for industrial designs
In-house systems (online/offline)
Searches are done by the examiners manually. Search material includes industrial design application and registered industrial design which are kept in folders.

Other Intellectual Property (IP) Office's website is accessible in assisting examination and for reference purposes.

Statistics are prepared by examining officers. At present administrative management system is done manually.

Application for industrial designs can be made by post or in person at our main Office in Kuala Lumpur or our branches in Sabah and Sarawak.

Industrial designs examination staff are available to provide additional guidance and assistance to the public interested in searching registered industrial designs. The materials available for public search are kept in folders.
Information services available to the public (including computerized services and search files contained in libraries remote from your Office and industrial design information posted by your Office on the World Wide Web).
The official website provides a wide range of information including benefits of registered industrial design, procedures on registering an application, guides to applicant, design law, fee payment and frequently asked questions. Application and related forms are available in pdf form and are downloadable. Besides information available through the internet, searches could be made in person at our main Office.

Assistance in the form of promotional activities to developing countries were not extended.

The Industrial Designs Office through the Malaysian Intellectual Property Office's (MyIPO) promotional activities were involve in a number of events and seminar conducted for the Malaysian business community and students on the importance of intellectual propert rights.

X. Other relevant matters
In the year 2006, The Industrial Designs Office with the cooperation of IP Australia hosted a workshop on Industrial Designs Examination from 6-10 November 2006. The participants were Industrial Designs Officers from the ASEAN countries. IP Australia had provided two experience Industrial Designs Officers to train the participants in the search and examination procedures among others.
