Matters concerning classification

Classification and reclassification activities; classification systems used, e.g., International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (Nice Classification), International Classification of the Figurative Elements of Marks (Vienna Classification), and other classification systems:
https://rospatent.gov.ru/en/products_services/classifications

In 2025, Rospatent continued to participate in the improvement of the Nice Classification. The Office's activities included the following:

  • preparation of proposals for amendments to the 13th edition of the Nice Classification version 2026 (NCL13-2026) for the 36th session of the Committee of Experts on the Nice Classification of Goods and Services;
  • preparation of an official translation into Russian of new and modified terms used in the NCL13-2026;
  • translation into Russian of terms for the WIPO Global Goods and Services Database and submission of these materials to the WIPO International Bureau;
  • preparation of the terms of the NCL13-2026 in Russian in a special format for uploading to the Rospatent software package to allow their use in e-filing and registration, as well as to provide access to them during the examination process.

Use of electronic classification systems and pre-defined terms of the classification applied

Since 2011, automatic electronic classification of the figurative elements of the input stream of images of national and Madrid applications has been carried out under the 6th edition of the Vienna Classification. This became possible in 2006 when the SILOIZ system of linguistic description and search for similarities in figurative elements was introduced – a sub-system of the automated system "Trademarks in Force in the Russian Federation".

The results of classification are provided to experts as an additional service when they examine claimed designations.

Matters concerning processing of different types of non-traditional marks (e.g., three-dimensional, motion, hologram, color mark, etc.)

Rospatent participates in the regulatory and methodological settlement of issues related to examination of applications for non-traditional trademarks and the publication of corresponding information. In addition, information obtained through the IP Office's involvement in the Standing Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications is widely used.
