The expression "industrial designs" covers industrial designs and models. Offices which issue design patents should report their design patent information activities in this series of Annual Technical Reports.
I. Evolution of registration activities
There is a positive dynamics in number of industrial design applications filed by the national applicants. In 2008, 117 applications were filed. There is observed a decrease in number of industrial design applications filed by the foreign applicants – 84 applications in 2008, it is less to 17.9 percent of the 2007 total (see Table 1).
With demolition of the preliminary patent the number of preliminary patents for industrial designs issued in the year 2008 grew less and made up 31 for national applicants and 25 for foreign applicants. On the contrary, in 2008 the number of patents for industrial designs issued to the foreign applicants went up significantly with 21 patents, in 2007 – only 2 patents. In 2008 national applicants were granted 7 patents for industrial designs (see Table 2).

II. Matters concerning the generation, reproduction, and distribution of industrial design documents and of secondary sources of industrial design information, i.e., official gazettes
Industrial design information is available on paper and optical carriers.
The main source of information on industrial designs registered in the Republic of Kazakhstan is Industrial Property Official Gazette, which is published monthly in Kazakh and Russian. Announcements are published in the Official Gazette. NIIP also issues an Annual Index to the Official Gazette.
In 2008, NIIP prepared and published 2007 Annual Report, four numbers of Journal Intellectual Property of Kazakhstan, and some guidelines.
Bibliographic data for Gazette is generated automatically from the database. Abstracts, full descriptions and claims are scanned, recognized and edited. Texts can be typed in case the recognition is not possible. The Office uses program ABBYY FineReader 7.0 for Optical Character Recognition.
It is expected to develop an open industrial design database register for efficient work with the national and foreign applicants. This database will make it possible to computerize the office management as well as develop an electronic gazette on industrial designs.
III. Matters concerning classifying, reclassifying and indexing of industrial design information according to the classification systems applied
The Office uses International Classification for Industrial Designs (Locarno Classification) for classifying industrial designs.
IV. Search file establishment and upkeep
When a design application is received all information on it is entered into the national Industrial designs database. The information is updated in the course of office procedures.
Information on registered industrial designs, including bibliographic data, descriptions is stored on CD-ROMs as well as on paper carriers.
V. Activities in the field of computerized search systems for industrial designs
NIIP uses on-site automated systems for search procedures, which include information on industrial designs being processed by the Office.
Industrial design examiners use open registers maintained by the Russian Patent Office for searching for international novelty which are accessible via the Internet.
Equipment used at the Office: Hardware: system block P4 Core2Duo 1,8GHz, 160 HDD, 526 Mb, DVD-RW, video 128, m/k, LAN. Software: WINDOWS, Microsoft Office 2003, FOX PRO.
VI. Administration of industrial design information products and services available to the public (relating to facilities, e.g., for lodging applications, registering designs, assisting clients with search procedures, obtaining official publications and registry extracts)
